Part 3: A Black Woman’s Opinion to Navigate a 2023 Layoff

Over the past six months or so, I’ve continued to receive these prompts throughout my Google Suite accounts, demanding that I make a decision to either purchase additional storage space or delete some of the items within the account so that it can continue to function properly. However, I’ve tried everything to free up space. I’ve deleted all of my spam, trash, old files, and emails. Yet, the same message, “storage is full…delete files for more space,” continues to prompt me every time I sign in.

“If you can’t start to imagine a different life, that’s an indication that you’re already living behind fear.” – 19 Keys

Although irritating, these repetitive prompts have served as reminders of inevitable decisions. Not the “straddle the fence” choices that I’ve found comfort in making my entire life, where there was just enough change to push me out of my comfort zone without truly disrupting comfort. Reflecting back on my January 2023 layoff, I realize how that moment interrupted patterns in my life, teaching me that letting go is the only way I can make space for the life that I, NOW, want to live. Similar to my Gmail dilemma, the only way that I can move forward is to either delete most of what I’ve saved over the years or start a new account. The bottom line is that in this phase of life, CHANGE and PRIORITIZING are essential.

“The only person I’m jealous of is my future self.” – 19 Keys

Within me, and quite frankly all of us, is a realm of genius (a.k.a greatness) that has yet to be revealed. For most of my life, I’ve spent more time hiding and making others comfortable instead of maximizing my greatest potential. As I scrub my drive, I see a decade of aborted dreams and ideas, and the only explanation as to why I didn’t finish is fear. Years ago, Marianne Williamson eloquently said, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate…we are powerful beyond measure.” And yes, when pitted against others, some may say, “you are doing an amazing job, or you’re simply not going hard enough.” But, we are not here to judge or compete with others because we exist to reach OUR HIGHEST POTENTIAL.

“I may have to change too many things if I start living fearlessly.” – 19 Keys

Almost six months post-layoff, the lessons I’ve learned have been far greater than what I’ve achieved. To end this series of articles, I’d like to leave you with some gems I’ve found along the way that will continue to not only guide my career journey but my life moving forward.

The WORK was FINISHED the day you were born. REST in knowing that life will provide clues to unlock your greatness.

You’re the MASTERPIECE(PEACE). You’re part of a greater picture, so don’t be afraid to live outside of fear.

Every moment provides two options: “Win or Learn.” -Nelson Mandela. Learn quickly so that you can WIN again and again.

MAKE SPACE for your greatness. Holding only blocks your opportunity to grow.

YOU MAY ALSO ENJOY PARTS ONE AND TWO OF THIS SERIES

The post “Storage is Full,” Delete Files for More Space appeared first on URBN Social.

At some point during the pandemic, I decided to limit my access to the news and social media and to date, I haven’t fully re-engaged. My awareness of the world’s chaos and woes is limited, anxiety low, and optimism for the future remains high without the cycles of negativity replaying in my head. Many may criticize my decision to “tap out” and remain somewhat oblivious to world events, but for me, this is one of the ways that I deliberately maintain my peace of mind. And at the time, I didn’t realize that I was setting a great boundary to protect my own mental health.

“Possessing extreme faith is a practice in living on the edge yet feeling tucked in and protected. Once you settle into it, you gain power from the feeling. You become magic. You can soar. You can dream.”

― Tricia Hersey, Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto

After being laid off, I was told I had three weeks to pivot internally or make the decision to leave the company completely. Knowing that my layoff was not performance related, I was wondering if I should feel grateful or motivated that I would have time to decide my next steps. As my colleagues scrambled to update resumes, reach out to contacts, etc. one thing I realized was, for the first time in nearly 30 years, I was actually not doing something and damn, that felt good. My reality as a wife, mother, and household contributor would ultimately determine my next steps but taking time to REST became the necessary option I needed to recalibrate and celebrate all that I have been able to accomplish up until this point.

“Along with stealing your imagination and time, grind culture has stolen the ability for pleasure, hobbies, leisure, and experimentation. We are caught up in a never-ending cycle of going and doing.”

― Tricia Hersey, Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto

Of course, this approach of PEACE and REST goes against the grain of how we’re programmed to respond when faced with a layoff or unexpected misfortunes. Typically, thoughts of anxiety, worry, and unrest dominate as we push forward into the future. Anger and depression are residual expectations because most of the time, we are on the “hamster wheel of life” chasing an unknown dangling carrot that is often reduced, removed, or replaced the moment we are ready to take a bite. And I won’t lie; through this process, there have been some sleepless nights and uncertainties because although a part of me felt peace, I wondered if I should enlist in the reactions of the status quo.

“Grieving the reality of being manipulated to believe we are not enough, divine, or valuable outside of our accomplishments and bank account is a central part of our rest work.”

― Tricia Hersey, Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto

In her book, Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto, Tricia Hersey stated, “We are resting simply because it is our divine right to do so.” The moment of rejection (a.k.a layoff) initially led me to feel guilt, shame, fear, and every negative emotion my previous trauma could gather. But what if the glass was half full? That these events were aligned in my favor? Not to become better at what I’ve been accustomed to but to shift me inward to embrace that which has always been my existence. My peace, mental health, and overall well-being are more than a tagline on a t-shirt. Moving forward, I now know there is no more “WORK” to do. There is more REST to be had so that I can go inward to better understand WHO I AM and HONOR HER indefinitely.

YOU MAY ALSO ENJOY PART ONE OF THIS SERIES

RESOURCE: The Nap Ministry

The post “Rest is Resistance” Part 2: A Black Woman’s Opinion to Navigate a 2023 Layoff appeared first on URBN Social.

Opening this fall, Lincoln University students and the surrounding community will benefit from a unique partnership with Metro Esports, a subsidiary of Metro Sports & Entertainment Group, designed to promote the growth and development of students in a collaborative environment. This facility will foster a wealth of opportunities for student and community development through an esports lounge, programming, and partnership extensions. The esports industry has exceeded the $3 billion mark in annual revenue and is expected to grow exponentially, as esports and gaming provide enrichment, comradery, and professional pathways in the modern world to create opportunities for youth seeking careers in a myriad of industries.

Lincoln University, the nation’s first degree-granting historically Black College/University (HBCU), is excited to launch a complete innovation center integrating esports to ensure students have the opportunity to experience a custom STEM curriculum, collaboration opportunities, and state-of-the-art technology. “The Lincoln varsity esports team will also operate out of the facility housed in the Wellness Center on campus and operate as a full-fledged club sport. Esports is truly a sport in that it requires critical thinking, strategy, problem-solving, and analysis as with other sports,” says Lincoln Athletic & Recreation Director, Harry Stinson III. The evolution of athletic student life will answer the call of an increasingly popular activity and career pathway, meeting student needs both academically and recreationally. Through this partnership, both parties will continue to break boundaries by providing Lincoln University students with short and long-term benefits. In addition, Metro Esports will work with its corporate partners to hire Lincoln students for internship and permanent career opportunities, through coordinated programming allowing students to be integrated into an ecosystem of opportunity. As a liberal arts institution, Lincoln prides itself on offering a diverse curriculum and services to its students and partnering with authentic and experienced partners that allow for an infinite connection point for all students on campus, regardless of their discipline.

In partnership, these organizations will provide students with opportunities to have educational and esports programming, content, and career development. The gaming facility will offer information, recreation, and revenue to the university and its students. Metro Esports will develop Lincoln’s esports team, provide a tech education curriculum, enrich information technology programs, organize event programming including tournaments, and more. Tech education programming offered by Metro Esports results in certifications and STEM accreditation which help the students acquire internships and/or employment opportunities with program partners. Further, Metro Esports intends to create unique activations for its current partners including Verizon, Microsoft, Twitch, Riot Games, Logitech G, Kidas, and YMCA who among other things provide free game licensure, networking, software, and peripheral gaming equipment to bring the experience to life. Dr. Sam Williams, Director of Lincoln’s Lincubator initiative is excited to add esports to enhance the existing programs to engage students and encourage them to discover, innovate and grow with business curriculum, virtual reality, graphic design, pre-production, 3D printing, and more. “The partnership with Metro is in alignment with our strategy to expose students to the best in technology to prepare them for the workforce via the Lincubator, the University’s world-class, state-of-the-art Business and Entrepreneurial Center,” says Dr. Williams.

“This space is a long-term commitment and we see this as a central part of our broad offering of co-curricular activities that allows our students to have a permanent space for innovation. Technology is essential to learning in the 21st century. If we are working hand in hand with technology and translating the skill sets that are developed, there is greater applicability than recreation or sport, but there are pedagogical implications. We are interested in seeing how those skills translate to other areas and believe this will become a great research tool from a learning standpoint,” says Lincoln University President, Dr. Brenda Allen.

Additionally, the local community will benefit from the partnership with the integration of summer camps, recruiting events as well as invitations and opportunities to local underserved organizations. The aforementioned partners will work with Metro Esports and Lincoln University to create educational and economic mobility for the community at large. “This is about helping remove barriers and making information and resources available to curious young minds, no matter their background,” says Shaon Berry, Metro Esports, CEO.

The continued dedication of Metro Esports and Lincoln University allows for a reimagined legacy, committed to education, liberation, and leadership.

About Metro Esports & Entertainment Group: WEBSITE

About Lincoln University: Lincoln University Lincubator

SOURCE: Metro Esports Metro Sports & Entertainment Group

The post Metro Sports & Entertainment Group Partners With, Lincoln University To Create Its First Esports Stem Education Lab & Content Studio At A HBCU appeared first on URBN Social.

Black Virtual Career Fair (BVCF) hosts its 10th Virtual Career Fair on Thursday, March 24th, 9am-1pm PST. BVCF connects Black professionals with innovative and inclusion-minded companies offering exciting career opportunities. The event offers participants a rare opportunity to connect with hiring managers at industry-leading companies while building their business network. Nationwide job opportunities will be available from 16 companies targeting technical and non-technical professionals in various industries including TECH, SALES & MARKETING. March’s career fair includes major employers such as Anthem, Cooley LLP, First Citizen Bank, Good Eggs, and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.

According to recent articles, the pace of The Great Resignation, fueled by COVID could be slowing down. A trend started in April of 2021, over 4.5 million workers have quit their jobs, leaving companies in desperate need of employees. “The reverberations of The Great Resignation have negatively affected companies and employees,” says Lakeisha Poole, Partner, Black Virtual Career Fair and Founder, Onyx Community Connection. “It has left a multitude of companies short-staffed and has placed more stress along with higher expectations on current and aspiring employees. However, BVCF looks to assist and help guide black professionals by connecting them with companies who not only share their values but recognize their value,” says Poole.

“BVCF is confident in its mission to connect qualified Black professionals with companies who are looking for new employees, especially during these stressful times,” says Michael DeFlorimonte, Partner, Black Virtual Career Fair, and Founder, African American Employee Network (AAEN). “We’ve succeeded in connecting Black professionals to innovative companies in the past and will proceed to do so going forward. A large percentage of workers who’ve resigned from their former positions is primarily due to the lack of recognition and feeling a poor sense of connection. We inspire Black professionals to understand the types of values they’re looking for in a company and gain a stronger sense of the abilities they have to offer. By pursuing both ideas one will find themselves entering the business world with better clarity as well as a deeper feeling of confidence. Now is the time to begin building the foundation for your business career. Now is the time to begin connecting,” says DeFlorimonte.

BVCF provides Black professionals, both active and aspiring, with free services, resources, and tools to assist with the entire job search process. Employers can review resumes and post jobs. Candidates, recruiters and hiring managers interact in real-time via audio, video and text chat during the fair, which is from 9:00 am- 1:00 pm PST.

Candidate registration is free.
