LITTLE MERMAID

Social media is having a temper tantrum launching the hate train campaign with #NotMyAriel and #NotMyMermaid because their beloved Ariel will be played by black Actress, Singer, Halle Bailey in the “remake” of the 1989 blockbuster hit The Little Mermaid.

The keyword is “remake”, to make again or differently.

Granted, I’m personally not a fan of classic characters being changed like the iconic Batman. Can we just say no Ben, NO!

But the bottom line is if Disney could have found a caucasian actress that fit their narrative they would have. Clearly, Halle fits the bill and has a voice like an angel. Just because she is a woman of color doesn’t mean that she will do the character a disservice. White actors and actresses have been playing the part of African Americans for years, like Cleopatra! Ummm excuse me? “Cleopatra…when was she a white woman?

We live in different times. Change is necessary to grow. This is a great opportunity for those not of color to embrace something other than what they are used to. I think people should at least give it a chance first before making any negative comments. This young lady went in for an audition and got the part, so don’t blame her. Watch the movie with your children and explain to them that beauty comes in many forms and shades.

What are your thoughts?

  1. I’m excited to see the new Ariel! Halle is beautiful and so talented. I really don’t understand why people have lost their minds over a mythical character ??‍♀️ especially when we have a real life orange villain in charge…
