Multifaceted filmmaker, writer, director, and artist Terence Nance get up close and personal in a conversation with Maori Karmael Holmes, Chief Executive and Artistic Officer of BlackStar, about his exhibition “Swarm,” showing now through July 9, 2023, at the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania.

Swarm is Nance’s first solo exhibition with a multimedia storyline, immersing visitors with six intimately curated experiences sharing his inspiration and expression of personal experiences and history in art form.

“The exhibition highlights the artist’s experimentation in film, video, television, sound, and performance during the ten-year period spanning 2012 to 2022. The title of the exhibition, Swarm, is a tribute to the community of friends and family Nance built around him in Brooklyn in the early to mid-2000s. Each piece reflects their influence: from collaborations with his mother, Vickie Washington, and brother, Nelson Mandela Nance, to the partnerships he’s created with friends and chosen kin.”
