17 YEAR OLD ARJUN NIMMALA MAKING HISTORY
On July 17th, in a slot valued at $3,746,000, the Blue Jays picked up 17-year Arjun Nimmala for $3,000,000 in the 20th draft pick. That’s not bad for a kid on the cusp of adulthood. But that isn’t the biggest surprise! Arjun is the “first” first-round drafted pick of Indian descent into the Major Leagues. Even more surprising, is there are less than a handful of MLB baseball players of Indian descent.
Notably, 35-year-old Dinesh Kumar Patel and 34-year-old Rinku Singh, both signed briefly with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2008 and inspiration behind the 2014 Walt Disney film The Million Dollar Arm. These two signed up for a reality tv show held in India to find an inexperienced cricket player and groom them to be the best in the sport of Baseball.
Needless to say, Arjun is a first-generation born Indian American, a shortstop of natural talent, and an inspiration to the culture. This selection proceeds him and the face of change the industry needs.
