Our artist pick of the week is Alexandra Isley, also known as “Alex Isley”! Who is Alex Isley, you may ask? She is a singer, songwriter, producer from New Jersey, and let’s say that music runs in the family. Her father (Ernie Isley) is one of the legendary “Isley Brothers”; you may have heard of them.
Ernie Isley deserves his flowers for being a renowned musician and songwriter. Recently sharing with Rolling Stone, the story behind the hit song “At Your Best, You Are Love,” written by him in the ’70s and covered by the late Aaliyah on her debut album “Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number,” released in 1994. It’s been 20 years since Aaliyah’s death and her catalog is finally available on Spotify. In honor of her memory Ernie and Alex Isley decided to bring the song full circle with Alex making it her own, and she did that! What better way to honor her father and Aaliyah, who influenced many.
Since coming on the scene with her debut album “The Love/Art Memoirs” in 2012, she’s stood out with her soft voice, amazing range, and perfect pitch. She is also blessed with synesthesia (When hearing music and seeing colors in your mind). Can you imagine how melodies look?
In the hit song “Good and Plenty,” featuring artist Masego we were like “WOW”! But it wasn’t enough, being in a generation of remixes, they added vocalist Lucky Day to the song, and it just hits different. Let’s say “issa whole vibe“!
Alex’s vocals hook you but it’s her lyrics that reel you in. Like one of our other favorite songs, “Into Orbit.” It’s genuinely a dreamy song:
(Chorus)
Alex Isley comes across as shy, but her talent speaks volumes. We wouldn’t say that she is an underrated artist; people need to just get their life!
You can follow her on INSTAGRAM, TWITTER, FACEBOOK, and listen to more from Alex on SPOTIFY, APPLE MUSIC, PANDORA, IHEART, and YOUTUBE.
Here is a mix from DJ Blenzz, who captured the essence of Alex Isley. Enjoy!
