Growth - EP by Olivia Dean (Courtesy of Apple Music)

We are coming back around the block with a new artist pick of the week. Olivia Dean is a 23-year-old UK singer and songwriter born to an English father and a Jamaican-Guyanese mother. Her vocals speak for themselves! Sultry and rounded with lyrics that we can all relate to.

As a teenager, she started singing at a young age, like most in the church choir and was accepted into the BRIT School for performing and creative arts in Croydon, South London. No biggie, right? Wrong! Some of our favorite artists, like Marsha Ambrosius, Amy Winehouse, Jessie J, FKA Twigs, and Adele, graduated from the BRIT School. It is very prestigious and competitive to get into, with auditions/interviews from December to March for ages 14 -18. The entire process takes up to 10 months, so planning is necessary.

Olivia Dean comes from a long line of talented artists, which is commendable. Dean had the pleasure of collaborating with the popular band Rudimental before making her big break as a solo artist. She made a big impression with her debut album, Okay Love You Bye, and the hit song “Password Change” nominated in the 2020 UK Music Video Awards for Best R&B/Soul Video (UK). Dean was named Amazon Music’s 2021 breakthrough artist of the year with her rendition of Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song.”

What else can we say? Olivia Dean is in her prime, and she is just getting started. We will watch and keep our ears open for more amazing music.

You can follow her on INSTAGRAM, TWITTER, and FACEBOOK, and listen to more from Olivia on SPOTIFY, SOUNDCLOUD, APPLE MUSIC, PANDORA, IHEART, and YOUTUBE.
