On June 18th, 35-year-old Carlisha Hood and her 14-year-old son were getting food at the Maxwell Street Express at 810 W. 117th Street in Chicago, Illinois, when their lives changed forever.
A video circulating around social media showed Hood and 32-year-old Jeremy Brown in a heated argument when Brown began repeatedly attaching Hood punching her in the head. It was reported that Hood texted her son to come inside the restaurant. Now if she allegedly told her son to bring her gun and shoot Brown or not. Ultimately, Hood’s son shot 32-year-old Brown, who later died from his injuries.
Hood and her son were arrested and charged with first-degree murder until the district attorney dropped all charges “in light of emerging evidence,” “based upon the facts, evidence and the law, we were unable to meet our burden.” reported 5 Chicago.
Carlisha Hood has now filed a lawsuit against the city of Chicago and five officers involved in the arrest of Hood and her 14-year-old son, alleging malicious prosecution, false arrest, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
OUR THOUGHTS
We are not victim shaming, but in our opinion, once Mr. Brown put his hands on Ms. Hood, all bets were off! Everyone has the right to defend themselves by any means necessary.
So Ms. Hood’s son came to her rescue, which is more than the adults that were in the restaurant, and who stood around and did NOTHING to de-escalate the situation, while this “MAN”, “SON”, “FATHER OF TWO YOUNG GIRLS” beat a woman. Was he triggered, maybe? But there is no excuse for that.
Social media is not forgiving, and Mr. Brown seemed to have a lengthy criminal record.
No one’s life deserves to be taken. One thing is certain. How you choose to live out your life is up to you, and with every action, there is a reaction. What do you think you would have done, and do you agree with the charges being dropped?
We must find a solution to stop the violence in our neighborhoods. We cannot depend on the government, the Congressional Black Caucus, opportunists who are visible when a White police officer shot a Black person. There are too many Black men in prisons leaving mothers to attempt to raise boys to be men. I share Black history on my blog every day at 6:30 p.m. EST showing if our ancestors endured in hardship we can too turn obstacles and barriers into stepping stones, become inventors, investors, or whatever we put our minds too. It is time for unity and harmony. If we do not respect ourselves no one else will. Our children are left behind to survive by any means necessary and left behind to destroy one another and Black communities. It has to stop sooner than later. If our lives matters it needs to matter to us to make changes.
