After the passing of Virgil Abloh in November 2021, Louis Vuitton announced Pharrell Williams, singer, rapper, songwriter, and producer, as their new Men’s Creative Director.
Pharrell isn’t new to the fashion industry or Louis Vuitton, as he collaborated with Japanese designer Nigo on a line of sunglasses in 2004 under the then-creative director Marc Jacobs and yet again in 2008, working on the Blason jewelry collection under former LV jewelry consultant Camille Miceli.
There are always going to be skeptics! Pharell may not have a fashion degree, but his style is confident and unapologetic. Yesterday debuted his first collection at the Men’s Spring-Summer 2024 Show in Paris at Fashion Week. It was such a joy! Starting with two men speaking on a park bench about how badly you can want something. If you want something so bad, just go for it.
Then a live orchestra kicks in with dramatic music as men and androgens women walk down the checkered-patterned runway in short-set suites, quilts, army fatigue-ish block prints, Louis Vuitton’s iconic Damier Ebene print pant suites, and various pops of color in every selection, adding a bit “oomph” to every outfit. We loved watching the show abroad and giving homage to the LVovers while being completely humble, bringing out his staff at the end of the show to take a final walk.
Jay Z and Beyonce were in the front row as the beat dropped to the choir singing “Joy (unspeakable).” That was the moment that Pharrell claimed his place! He is most certainly deserving of being in the space as Creative Director at Louis Vuitton. Fashion is about self-expression, making space, and understanding that every opportunity is a blessing to spread joy.
Virgil Abloh would be proud! What do you think of the show?
